“Marquis is one of the brightest stars of his generation. He has a rich and deep tone, a masterful command of his instrument and a strong compositional voice.” – Edition CEO, Dave Stapleton
“Marquis stands out because his melodic sense is almost beyond harmony. He can take melody and pull harmony to his will, which is what he exemplified on that track and improvisation in that context.” – pianist, Greg Spero
One of the most celebrated young trumpeters of the East-Coast (USA) jazz scene, Marquis Hill makes his debut performance in Singapore at Esplanade’s Jazz in July.
Having been mentored by Bobby Broom, Willie Pickens, Tito Carrillo, and other Chicago greats, Marquis developed a lovely velvety tone that’s derived from the contemporary jazz style that blends urban groove and bebop. He won the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition in 2014 and with five acclaimed albums to his name, he is a jazz virtuoso and a leader of this generation’s New York scene musicians. Marquis most recently performed music from his 2022 album New Gospel Revisited at SFJAZZ.
Joining him onstage are a stellar line up of musicians. Michael King (piano)—an alumni of the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory who’s toured internationally with The Mike King Trio, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Marcus Printup. Junius Paul—an internationally recognised composer, bandleader, and highly versatile bassist who’s played for Dee Alexander, The Curtis Fuller Quintet and Donal Byrd, among others and Kendrick Scott—a drummer and composer who’s been named a “Rising Star” by Downbeat magazine and a “drummer whose time is now” by the New York Times.
