From the very beginning, Sharifah Amani somehow knew she wanted to tell stories. She was fortunate enough to meet and work with a master storyteller, the late Yasmin Ahmad.
Sharifah Amani is also happy that apart from helping to weave other people's tales, she gets to tell hers—three of which were short films she directed, namely Sangkar, Kampung Bangsar and Hawa. All three films were screened at the Roppongi Malaysian Film Week in Tokyo, Japan in 2015. Her latest short film 5 minit premiered at the 29th Singapore International Film Festival in 2018.
She is grateful to Him for the gifts of Sepet, Gubra, Muallaf and Pigeon—with Pigeon being one of the three films presented under the Asian Three-Fold Mirror 2016 by Japan Foundation Asia Center and Tokyo International Film Festival.
Sharifah Amani has also sat on many short film judging panels such as Tropfest, BMW Shorties, Singapore International Film Festival and Next New Wave, among others. There are many names for what she does but ultimately, all she wants to do is tell a story in hopes she inspires others to do the same.
