Samsui Women

In the early 1930s, amidst the ravages of famine, Lou Dai Hou, Ah Yuet and Ah Lai, three women from Samsui, a district in Foshan, Guangdong Province, ventured to Nanyang (Singapore) to earn a living. After the farewell prayers at their village temple, they started their perilous journey to Singapore. To survive in this new place, they toiled relentlessly at heavy construction sites, donning the emblematic red headscarves as they bore the weight of their star-crossed fate. The Samsui women sang their “Joy Song” as they kept their faiths, kindness and held their beliefs to overcome all those valleys of challenges and setbacks. Ever kind and gentle, they nurtured one another with patience and warmth, shielding each other from life's storms. They were willing to sacrifice their lives to uphold the beauty of life and the purity of humanity for their families and sisters who shared the same destiny.
