Synopsis

National Contemporary Ballet makes its Esplanade debut with Impermanence, a new work by Singapore dance veteran Jeffrey Tan.

 

Choreographed in an unmistakable style that adorns the bedrock of classical ballet technique with the flair of neo-classical expression, Impermanence is a creative reflection on the ever evolving landscape of Singapore. Looking to both the past and future, the piece aims to capture a sense of vibrance and versatility, inspired by the city and its growth.

 

Impermanence is commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay.

 

This programme is part of da:ns focus – Ballet by the Bay, a ballet lovers’ weekend of classics and neo-classical works. Be inspired by world-class productions and be introduced to new perspectives on this celebrated art form.

Jeffrey Tan (Artistic Director & Choreographer)

Homegrown talent Jeffrey Tan has a vast history of professional experience and is one of Singapore’s most prolific and established dancers, choreographers, and educators. Formerly a principal dancer and assistant ballet master with Singapore Dance Theatre, now known as Singapore Ballet, he also holds a Master of Fine Arts from Queensland University of Technology and has held the position of the Head of Dance at Singapore Chinese Girls’ School. In 2013, he was appointed the Principal of the Singapore Ballet Academy. He is currently the principal and founder of One Dance Asia.

 

A recipient of the Singapore Young Artist Award (Excellence in Dance) 2000 as well as the Educational Grant for Postgraduate Study (Masters) 2003, Jeffrey has performed the works of George Balanchine, Goh Choo San, Leigh Warren, Graham Lustig, Jean-Paul Comelin, Val Caniparoli, Stanton Welch, Richard Wherlock, Thierry Malandain, Nacho Duato, Joachim Schlomer, Jiri Kylian, Boi Sakti, and Marie-Claude Pietragalia, to name a few. He has danced principal roles in ballets such as Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Petrushka, Rite of Spring, La Traviata, and many more.

 

Despite a late start in dance at the age of 21, his illustrious career has brought him to perform at numerous international festivals such as Le Temps d’Aimer la Danse a Biarritz in France, Festival International Cervantino in Mexico, Chang Mu Arts Festival in Korea, Festival of Dance in the Philippines, Dance Salad in Texas, Singapore Arts Festival and Esplanade’s da:ns Festival. Jeffrey has also toured extensively to the United States, Australia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and London and has critical acclaim and success with his performances and choreography.

 

Jeffrey is currently the Regional Director of Singapore Dance Alliance. 

Shining Goh (Production Stage Manager)

Shining Goh has been active in managing dance productions, working on many local and overseas festivals. She has toured extensively with T.H.E Dance Company and worked on most of their local and overseas productions since its establishment. She was the company’s previous Production Stage Manager.

 

A recipient of the National Arts Council grant, she was assistant to the Technical Director of City Contemporary Dance Company (Hong Kong), producing Sang Jijia’s full-length work, Post-Perception/Transcendence in 2017. She has been the Gala Events Manager for the Singapore International Film Festival since 2017.

 

Currently, she is a freelancer who enjoys working with independent artists and companies.

Adrian Tan (Lighting Designer)

Since graduating from the LASALLE College of the Arts in 2006, Adrian Tan has been designing shows that have been staged locally and internationally. His work spans a wide spectrum of the performing arts and outdoor light installations. As one of Singapore’s most sought-after lighting designers, he has worked extensively across various disciplines in performing arts, and more recently ventured into architectural design and installations. He has also had the opportunity to work on multi-disciplinary entertainment projects such as collaborations with Disney for Star Wars May the Fourth Festival. A collaboration with the UK’s prominent landscape artist Tom Massey for the Singapore Garden Festival 2018 also led to a win in the Best Indoor Lighting Award during the festival. Several of his theatre works have received theatre awards, including shows like Monkey Goes West and Another Country by Wild Rice, A Cage Goes In Search Of a Bird by A Group Of People, BITCH For the M1 Fringe Festival and Dark Room, which was commissioned for The Studios by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay.

Marc Nair (Spoken Word Poet)

Marc Nair (PhD) is an educator, poet and multidisciplinary artist. Over the past 20 years, he has exhibited photographs, performed spoken word and has been the creative director of multiple artistic projects and festivals. Author of six collections of poetry, he has collaborated with graphic artists, photographers and visual artists on another four books.

Beryl Tay (Dancer)

Beryl Tay is a contemporary dancer and emerging choreographer based in Singapore. She was previously a company dancer for TRDOco in Singapore and Transitions Dance Company in London, performing in productions that toured locally and internationally to countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, the UK, and Italy. Beryl graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 2021 with a Master of Arts in Dance Performance, where she was honoured with the prestigious Trinity Laban Dance Award. Committed to developing her skills, she has participated in notable summer intensives such as OBOC Countertechnique, One Body, One Career by Anouk Van Dijk, and Orsolina 28, where she delved into the repertoire of Crystal Pite. Recently, Beryl was selected as a dance artist to represent Singapore in the collaborative project Rain Motions: Connecting (with) the Skies of Southeast Asia by ASEAN and SEAMEO SPAFA in Bangkok, Thailand. Continuously honing her skills and artistry, Beryl is dedicated to integrating her knowledge and experiences to elevate her craft.

Edina Handali (Dancer)

Hailing from Jakarta, Indonesia, Edina Handali started dancing at the tender age of five, training in ballet and hip hop. In 2018, she relocated to Singapore to pursue a Diploma in Dance at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts,graduating with Distinction in 2021. During her academic journey, Edina had the privilege of performing in works by choreographers such as Jeffrey Tan, Christina Chan, and Goh Jiayin, at events including Esplanade’s da:ns Festival, NAFA’s Third Space, and the Tari Dance Festival in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2022, she performed in National Contemporary Ballet’s premiere production, Amalgamation as an original cast member. Edina’s approach to movement and expression is influenced by her training in ballet, contemporary dance, and street dance. She currently teaches contemporary and street dance at Dancepointe Academy.

Eurie Lascano (Dancer)

Eurie Lascano started dancing at Renee Grace Rose Villa Center for Ballet and the Arts in San Pedro, Philippines and went on to receive a scholarship to attend Philippine High School for the Arts. She was presented with the Outstanding Student Artist Award upon graduation and received a grant from the Ministry of Education of Singapore to further her training at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. In June 2018, she attended an Overseas Immersion Program at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds, UK. Eurie was a Project Artist with Frontier Danceland in May 2019, and Arts Fission in May 2021. She participated in the Nederlands Dans Theater Summer Intensive 2019 on a full scholarship and performed in Dimo Milev and Tamako Akiyama’s work Green Shoots. She has also worked with film artist, Ennya Larmit, on a solo live-portrait piece entitled Home and performed 10-6 into the SKIN by Aiden Tan & Yang Wei Cheng for the M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival: Open Stage held at the Esplanade Annexe Studio. Eurie’s solo piece Self Portrait was presented at Sigma Contemporary Dance’s platform, Kaleidoscope II.

Kelly Ng (Dancer)

Kelly Ng commenced her ballet training in Singapore under the guidance of Donato C. Farrer before delving into various dance styles such as jazz, hip hop, and contemporary. She has had the privilege of honing her craft under the mentorship of esteemed dance figures including Lena Foo, Jean Chan, and Jeffrey Tan, among others. In 2014, she graduated with First Class Honours in Dance Studies from Roehampton University (UK). Since January 2015, Kelly has been an integral member of the Dance Faculty at the School of the Arts Singapore, where she imparts her knowledge and passion to aspiring dancers. A dynamic and accomplished dancer, she performed in National Contemporary Ballet’s premiere production, Amalgamation in 2022.

Sathonthorn Proramattamasakol (Dancer)

Sathonthorn Proramattamasakol, also known as Eakkie, has been passionate about dancing from a young age, and was initially drawn to hip hop and K-Pop. His formal training began at the age of 14 at Melody Plus School of Dance & Music, where he discovered a deep love for various dance forms, including ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance. During college, Eakkie worked as a freelance dancer for commercial events and excelled in Latin and Ballroom dance competitions, representing his university at the University Games of Thailand. In 2014, Eakkie joined Bangkok City Ballet, Thailand's renowned classical dance company. This opportunity allowed him to immerse himself in ballet and contemporary dance, participating in workshops led by esteemed teachers. Eakkie has served as an aerial instructor at Aerial Factory Bangkok, teaching aerial hoop, silk, and hammock. He currently teaches at Dance Plus Academy Bangkok, where he continues to share his passion and expertise with students.

Supatchai Lappakornkul (Dancer)

Supatchai Lappakornkul, also known as Tick Tock, hails from Bangkok, Thailand. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Western Music from Kasetsart University, and a Diploma in Dance from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) where he received the Best Graduate Award. As a dance educator, Tick Tock was an adjunct lecturer at NAFA and Singapore Raffles Music College from 2018 to 2022. He has also received recognition as a choreographer, having presented his work at platforms including the BCB Dance Collection, NAFA’s Third Space, and Esplanade’s da:ns Festival. He initiated film projects such as Dance No Boundaries and Make Myself At Home under Supatchai Dance Collectives, with the latter being selected for presentation at the Desassossego Video Dance Short Film Festival in Portugal. As part of Esplanade’s da:ns Festival 2021, Tick Tock presented Nātaya, a captivating dance performance on film that showcased his Thai heritage through a contemporary lens, blending Thai dance movement and children’s games with ballet and contemporary dance, accompanied by the Sawasdee Woodwind Quintet. He has performed at the Bangkok International Festival of Dance and Music, da:ns Festival (Singapore), and the M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival (Singapore). Tick Tock holds full certification as a Pilates instructor across all apparatus from Pilates Academy International (PAI) and currently teaches at Works Studio BKK and The Space BKK, while continuing to inspire and guide dance students in Thailand with his extensive experience and creativity.

Valerie Tan (Dancer)

Valerie Tan embarked on her dance journey at the School of The Arts Singapore and was subsequently awarded a scholarship to pursue further studies at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in early 2020. She graduated with a Diploma in Dance from NAFA in 2022, earning the prestigious Best Graduate award. Valerie has collaborated with esteemed local and international choreographers, including Jeffrey Tan, Kuik Swee Boon, and Supatchai Lappakornkul. In 2022, she performed in National Contemporary Ballet’s premiere production, Amalgamation. Valerie has also performed in One Dance Asia productions such as Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and The Nutcracker which showcase her versatility and artistry. She has participated in dance competitions such as the International Ballet Grand Prix Singapore, Get the Beat, and the Asian Grand Prix. Currently, Valerie is part of the scholar’s programme at Singapore Ballet, where she receives training from mentors Janek Schergen and Rosa Park. She also imparts her knowledge and passion for dance as a teacher at One Dance Asia.

Wong Ting Wei (Dancer)

Wong Ting Wei, a native of Singapore, began dancing at the age of five, and went on to receive formal training in classical ballet and contemporary dance. She graduated with top honours from both the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the School of the Arts, Singapore, earning a place on the Dean's List and multiple Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) Edusave Awards for Achievement, Good Leadership, and Service (EAGLES). Continuously seeking to refine her skills, Ting Wei recently expanded her horizons by participating in two summer intensives at Orsolina 28 in Italy, namely the Nunes/Flock Creation Programme and the León Lightfoot Intensive. She has been the recipient of the M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival Scholarship and the Sonata Product Scholarship. As a seasoned performer, Ting Wei has collaborated with several choreographers, expanding her versatility and adaptability to different movement styles. She is deeply passionate about movement exploration and cross-disciplinary interaction.
