Synopsis

“Katha kahe so kathak”—katha, story, is the root of kathak. Kathak has evolved through historical shifts from temple devotion to court entertainment, influenced by Persian and Mughal cultures. Over time, different gharanas (schools) emerged. The Lucknow Gharana, linked to Ishwar Prasad, focuses on grace, emotion, and the lasya style. The Jaipur Gharana, founded by Bhanuji, emphasises technical footwork and tandava elements. The Banaras Gharana, established by Janakiprasad, incorporates unique dance bols and religious stories, blending tandava and lasya.

At this event, Guru Aastha Chattaraj, Guru Jyotika Joshi, Guru Minhaz Khan will present an amalgamation of the three Gharanas. Performances will be accompanied by a talented team of Guru Mihir Kundu on Tabla, Guru P Sushanth on Vocal, Guru Subhadeep Kumar Biswas on harmonium & vocal and students from the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society (SIFAS) will showcase the tandava of Lord Shiva through their dance.

The Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society (SIFAS) is a non-profit Indian cultural organisation that has achieved a high level of artistic and technical excellence in the Indian fine arts. With a pan-Indian curriculum of 18 disciplines, the SIFAS Academy reflects the rich cultural diversity of ancient India. Its structured curriculum, classes, and examinations, along with an in-depth pedagogy and an artistic guidance, have fostered a multitude of homegrown talents that have gone on to provide principal support to arts and culture in Singapore and the region. SIFAS' contribution to the local arts scene has been extensive. In addition, through promoting and producing regular programmes on Indian music, dance and visual arts at its in-house auditorium, the SIFAS Stage, Dhwani Black Box, SIFAS Annexe and external venues, SIFAS has created awareness and understanding of Indian cultural heritage in the arts community, which is particularly valuable in a multi-ethnic community like Singapore.
