In recent years, furniture made of rattan has surged in popularity. But do you know that rattan can be weaved to be part of crafts or products such as jewellery, bags, coasters? Find out more about the art of rattan weaving in this workshop by ATINYMAKER Ng Si Ying.
The workshop will be inspired by the craft of traditional Chinese knots, the learnings of which are shared by artisan Ai Geok (@wearablecraft). During the workshop, Si Ying will introduce rattan as a weaving material, share her exchanges with Ai Geok, as well as the inspiration behind the craft piece, which participants will get to make and take home.
Mask-wearing is optional. However, audiences are encouraged to continue to exercise responsibility and caution, such as wearing masks when in crowded places.
ATINYMAKER
ATINYMAKER by Ng Si Ying is a research attempt that originated from a desire to discover more about a material that was, and still is, very dear to Singapore and Southeast Asia—rattan. Through exhausting rattan and pushing its materiality in aesthetics and function, every work and exploration with rattan is an ongoing dialogue to rediscover the old and new relationships—between man, other materials, and rattan’s purpose in our time.
Rekindle: Interweaving Traditions
Rattan artist Siying (also known as ATINYMAKER) speaks with traditional Chinese knots artisan Ai Geok of Wearable Crafts on the distinctions between their practices and their respective mediums of choice, sharing their sentiments on the realities of these dwindling art forms.
About Huayi’s documentary-workshop series, Rekindle
This craft workshop is part of Huayi’s inaugural documentary-workshop experience, which delves into traditional Chinese crafts and their surprising connections to the more familiar contemporary trends of today.
A short documentary was commissioned to uncover the stories of traditional artisans and the sunset industries that they have dedicated their lives to. Depicted through the lens of a young contemporary artist, it aims to invoke dialogue on how we can rekindle the legacy of traditions that have laid dormant or remain unknown. This line of inquiry is strengthened by the complementary onsite workshop.
