Mural of Dreams

Mural of Dreams was a public fundraising initiative that ran from 17 Jun – 23 Jul 2017 to raise funds for our community engagement work, and with an aim to bring people together to create a sense of community and belonging. 

This was Esplanade’s first public fundraising and centred on a specially commissioned 16.35m by 4m wall mural to be created at the Esplanade Annexe Studio. Consisting of 135,000 mosaic tiles, Mural of Dreams was designed by Singapore collective Tell Your Children and realised by Singapore mosaic artist Nanette Zehnder. Each mosaic tile could be bought and attached to the mural for a minimum donation of $2. 

Esplanade extends its heartfelt thanks to Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple for their unstinting support of Mural of Dreams. Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple is committed to empowering the disadvantaged in society, and they have consistently reached out to the needy over the years, with a spirit of compassion and service that is exemplified through its contributions to charities and medical and educational projects. 

Eighty-eight mural panels were contributed by corporate and individual donors, with the rest of the mural completed by onsite donations by patrons and tourists, and online donations from the public at Giving.sg. 

With this support, Mural of Dreams raised $329,000. Each year, Esplanade reaches out to over 10,000 children, seniors, at-risk youth and those with special needs. The generous donations that contributed to the initiative were vital in helping Esplanade do more for these underserved communities.
