It has been five years since playwright and director Edward Lam brought his work Why We Chat? 《聊斋》to Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts in Singapore. In these five years, so much has changed, and yet these changes are difficult for anyone to articulate. Five years—enough time for a newborn to challenge adults with hard questions, yet also inconsequential for those used to the impermanence of the world. Does change happen because of time or people?
If life were a play, in 90 minutes, what role would each of us play in this story? What would happen if we stitched together the small fragments of change into one big picture? Communicating with the audience has changed from the last time Lam presented a play to the audience. Will the five years that have passed change the impression people have of him? This is the one question Lam wants to answer, and as such there is only one way and one phrase to begin this encounter—long time no see.
Mask-wearing is optional. However, audiences are encouraged to continue to exercise responsibility and caution, such as wearing masks when in crowded places.
