Synopsis

Learn more about the history and development of the Chinese communities in Singapore through significant historical maps from 1819 to the 1930s in this talk by Map Research Consultant Mok Ly Yng. Mok will also share interesting tidbits about places where Chinese communities lived and worked, such as village names in rural Singapore like Yew Tee and Hong Kah, as well as places such as The Chinese High School and Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery.

Artist Information

Mok Ly Yng

Mok Ly Yng is a freelance mapping consultant and map researcher in Singapore. He was a Branch Head in Mapping Unit and a contract researcher with the National Archives of Singapore. He has served as a consultant to several map exhibitions, most recently being On Paper: Singapore Before 1867, which was held at the National Library Building from 28 September 2019 – 22 March 2020. He was also a speaker for Mapping the World: Perspectives from Asian Cartography, which was held at the National Library Building from 11 December 2021 – 8 May 2022.
