PULSATE is a sound installation that reflects on events that have taken place in recent times and their ensuing impact on the individual and society. Built on the concepts of reflection, reverberation and resounding, the work responds to and takes the pulse of its immediate surroundings. The installation is composed of waves of acrylic mirrored panels and reflective gold paper in varying sizes. Wedged between them are tweeters, a type of loudspeaker which produces high audio frequencies. Composed to play at different timings, various sound frequencies from the tweeters send vibrations to the gold paper, resulting in reverberations that alter the papers’ surfaces. Imprinted on the reflective materials are images of the ever-evolving environment around the Concourse, reminding us of our existence, and life’s occurrences which shape our perceptions and character. PULSATE is a poignant rumination on how we could emerge stronger from the sum of our collective experiences.
Zulkifle Mahmod (b.1975, Singapore), also known as ZUL, is at the forefront of a generation of sound-media artists in Singapore’s contemporary art development, a genre that has garnered interest for its interdisciplinary approach and experimental edge. ZUL represented Singapore at the Ogaki Biennale (2006) and was Singapore’s first sound artist at the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007). He integrates 3D forms with sound constructions and soundscapes, often crossing genres and collaborating with other artists. In 2017, ZUL received the inaugural honorary Soichiro Fukutake Prize by Benesse Holding Inc for his Singapore Biennale 2016 commissioned work, SONICreflection. He has exhibited widely in Singapore and internationally, including the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Kostanjevica na Krki in Slovenia, The National Art Center and Mori Art Museum in Japan and the Singapore Art Museum.
