Possessing a fluid, silken voice that flows effortlessly from one sound to the next, singer-songwriter Linying draws listeners in with her emotionally open music, penning sincere lyrics that invite others to find resonance within her words. In this live reimagining of her EP House Mouse (2023), Linying welcomes fans back into her interior world, performing crowd favourites alongside newer tracks that reflect her expanded sonic palette.
Linying first explored her innate musicality by playing piano as a child. At age eight, the Singapore-born, LA-based artist began dabbling in poetry, eventually writing songs of her own in her teenage years. Finding inspiration from the music of Bright Eyes and Bon Iver—both known for their honest lyricism and textural sounds—Linying started recording and uploading covers to YouTube. Not long after, she caught the attention of a French electronic act who enlisted her as a featured artist on a 2014 single—a turn of events that soon found her collaborating with the likes of Lost Frequencies and Felix Jaehn. As she continued working on her own material, she scored a viral hit with Sticky Leaves in 2016 and landed a deal with Nettwerk Music Group. Along with releasing a string of EPs and singles over the coming years—and taking the stage at festivals like Summer Sonic in Japan and Bigsound in Australia—Linying was commissioned to compose the 2021 National Day of Singapore theme song, a viral sensation that emerged as the most-watched YouTube video in her home country that year.
2022 saw the release of the acclaimed debut album There Could Be Wreckage Here, containing fan favourites like Faith and This Time, Tomorrow. Its follow-up, the 2023 EP House Mouse, reflects the joy that comes in creating with total abandon. The elaborate and eclectic sounds found on the record were the result of free experimentation alongside co-producer Jon Graber, where Linying followed her intuitions and arrived at the record’s eventual kaleidoscopic, dream-pop melodies. Constructed around the examination of her inner life and all its complexity, House Mouse retains the sense of intimacy listeners have come to expect of the singer-songwriter, while still containing elements of playfulness and effervescence.
Intentionally scaling back from her well-loved 2022 performance at Esplanade Concert Hall which saw a 1,200 strong crowd, Linying returns to her home city for a warm, intimate showcase at Esplanade Annexe Studio. Joining her as the opening act is indie-rock darling Subsonic Eye, who have similarly captured audiences in Singapore and beyond with its wistful lyricism and earworm melodies.
