Ramayan is a Malaysian neo-psychedelic pop-/rock outfit that was formed in September 2014, originally comprising five members but now consists of Pi’e (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Omar (bass, bass synth) and Que (drums, keys and synths).
They were signed under renowned Malaysia-based independent record label, Luncai Emas Sdn Bhd, in the same year. Their music largely revolved around ‘60s and ‘70s psychedelic prog-rock, with ballad-like melodies influenced by the likes of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Todd Rundgren and ABBA, as well as local heroes such as Alleycats, M. Nasir and the late Sudirman.
Their music has a unique blend of Malaysiana and Western sounds, sown together with Nusantara elements and their own style of Malay poetry and lyricality.
They have released one critically acclaimed self-titled EP and one LP, and performed live on national television, played on international stages in Indonesia and Korea, as well as opened for major international acts such as The Temper Trap (AUS), Barasuara (IND), Parasol (KOR) and MataJiwa (IND). Ramayan’s first official single, Oh Dewiku, received nationwide coverage through numerous features on the radio, newspapers, films and magazines.
Their first full-length LP saw a special collaboration with Indonesian artist and producer Mondo Gascaro . The LP’s single Lamunan Anak Bulan was released in mid-2020, and has since received nationwide critical acclaim for its fresh style and heavy psychedelia. The song eventually won the Best Song of 2020 on TAPAU Awards in December 2021. Their first full length album ‘Di Persiaran Cakrawala’ reached as far as Japan, having been released in vinyl format by popular indie Japanese record label, Big Romantic Records.
Ramayan is currently in the final phase of completing their second full length album, expected to be released this year.
