Synopsis

Step into the enchanting world of short verses, where the poetic magic of Cultural Medallion poet Zhou Can comes alive. At 91, Zhou continues to write with an enduring passion.

 

Curated by award-winning artist-poet Tan Chee Lay, composed and performed by the highly talented Tan sisters—Yuting, Yulin and Yuqing collectively known as TLQ—alongside the gifted Ding Jian Han, this modern day poetry-music performance will showcase Zhou Can’s mastery of short verses. Experience his beloved genre in newly-created compositions, which will be making their debut in this performance.

 

A programme of 60 Connections – At Home and Afar, a year-long season of Singapore stories and international collaborations in celebration of SG60.

Artist Information

Chew Kok Chang

Chew Kok Chang (周国灿), also known as Zhou Can (周粲), is an iconic Chinese author in Singapore and a recipient of the prestigious Singapore Cultural Medallion. Born in 1934 in Guangdong, China, he has had a remarkable writing career spanning over 70 years. A versatile writer, his extensive body of work includes poems, prose, short stories and critical essays.

Tan Chee Lay

Associate Professor Tan Chee Lay was awarded the coveted Young Artist Award by the National Arts Council in 2004 and the Singapore Youth Award in 2006. He enjoys researching Nanyang literati and artists, and runs a Facebook page, VeryNanyang, to share and promote Nanyang cultures. A founding member of the multilingual Poetry Festival Singapore, he has published almost 30 books, including academic works, poetry, children’s picture books, short stories, and prose. His latest book, Poems from the Eternal Summer (Taiwan's Times Publishing), won the Singapore Literature Prize in 2024.

Tan Yuting

Singaporean composer Tan Yuting explores the interaction and manipulation of rhythm, texture, and timbre to create evocative soundscapes. Her past collaborations include performances with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Megalopolis Saxophone Orchestra, Sandbox Percussion, Ekmeles, National Sawdust Ensemble, Tacet(i) Ensemble, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, Ensemble Dal Niente, The Opera People, K⼝U, Quince Ensemble, Empyrean Ensemble, ~Nois, Alarm Will Sound, Now Hear This, Unassisted Fold, and Ensemble Soundinitiative. In addition to composition, she also plays the piano, occasionally writes poetry, and enjoys collaborating with other art forms to create music.

Ding Jian Han

Ding Jian Han (b. 1994) is a composer and music educator from Singapore. His music has been performed in Singapore, Germany, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and New Zealand. Jian Han is currently Composer-in-residence with the new music ensemble Ensemble INprogRES, based in Germany. He also teaches music at Raffles Institution in Singapore. Additionally, he has worked as a music arranger and freelance composer for various individuals and organisations, including governmental agencies.

Tan Yuqing

YQ Tan (Tan Yuqing) is a singer-songwriter who has performed in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, and the Philippines, winning numerous solo singing competitions. Yuqing is also an alto singer with the Singapore Symphony Youth Choir. In September 2022, she held her debut sold-out concert at The Arts House, performing with her band, TLQ, which she formed with her sisters. The concert featured original songs from her EP Line-Of-Life. Her debut EP, Line-of-Life, was released the following year and is available for streaming on major music platforms. Her songs have received critical acclaim, with her single ILYM garnering over 1 million streams.

 

Tan Yulin

Tan Yulin plays the piano and enjoys singing and learning to play new instruments, such as the drums and guitar. She is an alto singer with the Singapore Symphony Youth Choir. Besides performing at many community and corporate events locally, Yulin has also performed at an indoor stadium for a Town Fiesta in Maddela, Philippines.
