Synopsis

Join acclaimed Singaporean composer Germaine Goh as she explores the curious dichotomy of spring in her latest suite of original compositions. Adding award-winning musicians, clarinetist Ralph Emmanuel Lim and saxophonist Samuel Phua to the mix, this promises to be a night where musical brilliance and creativity take centerstage.

Germaine Goh is an emerging Singaporean composer and arranger whose musical oeuvre has been described as “whimsical, radiating warmth and sensitivity” (The Straits Times, 2023). Known for her distinctive sonic identity and eclectic artistic approach, Germaine has made her indelible mark on commissioned works for ensembles such as the re:Sound Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Association of Singapore Orchestra, Dingyi Music Company, Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonic Wind Orchestra. With a keen ear for music production, Germaine has also worked with a diverse array of artists, including the likes of Jeremy Monteiro, Joanna Dong, Michelle SgP and OKLETSGO.

 

As a contemporary composer, Germaine’s creative pursuits extend into the realm of multidisciplinary work. She has written music for animated short films, musicals as well as for Dance. She is Composer-in-Residence for local dance collective The Kueh Tutus and has been commissioned to compose works for institutions such as LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore and the School of the Arts, Singapore (SOTA).

 

Germaine graduated with first-class honours from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore, where she read Music Composition and Arrangement, under the guidance of composition mentors Belinda Foo and Felix Phang.

Award-winning clarinet soloist Ralph Emmanuel Lim is the Principal Clarinetist of Singapore’s Resound Collective, and founder of the award-winning clarinet ensemble CLARQuinet.

 

Ralph appears frequently as a soloist with Resound Collective, Philharmonic Winds Group, and the Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra. In 2021, he was regarded as the highlight of the evening when he performed the Brahms Clarinet Quintet with Concordia Quartet. Pushing the artistic boundaries of Singaporean musicians, Ralph teamed up with the Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra and established composer Germaine Goh to commission a clarinet concerto, Kaleidoscope, fantasy for solo clarinet and orchestra. It premiered in August 2022 to rave reviews, with Ralph himself as the soloist. In 2019, he also partnered with the Philharmonic Winds Group and worked closely with music arranger Jay Ong to arrange the popular piece Fly Me To The Moon for solo clarinet and wind orchestra. Ralph studied under Tang Xiao Ping, Assistant Principal Clarinetist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, while studying at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. He then studied under Timothy Lines and Janet Hilton while studying at the Royal College of Music in London.

With numerous awards and accolades under his belt, Ralph has won the 2017 and 2015 Singapore Clarinet Festival with CLARQuinet, and the second prize at the 2015 Prof. Dichler International Competition in Vienna. Additionally, he was awarded a Distinction in the Royal College of Music Woodwind Concerto Competition in London, and was also the winner of the 2014 Singapore National Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. On the international stage, Ralph has appeared as a soloist alongside Indonesian superstar Isyana Sarasvati, and Principal Clarinetist for the Jakarta Concert Orchestra and the Jakarta Sinfonietta.

 

Ralph is a Buffet Crampon Clarinet Artist and currently plays on a 2021 limited edition Légende in Mopane by Buffet Crampon, 74/85.

Samuel Phua

Hailed as "Singaporean Saxophone Extraordinaire" by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Samuel Phua is a recipient of the Singapore National Arts Council Arts Scholarship

(Undergraduate) in 2017. He graduated from the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, with a Bachelor of Music Degree with minors in Performance Coaching, Chamber Music, Improvisation and Pedagogy under the tutelage of Joonatan Rautiola.

 

Samuel is a passionate advocate for contemporary music by local living composers. He has performed under renowned conductors and as a soloist with Singapore's top orchestras and bands. Internationally, he was a finalist in the 2020 "Classic Winds" International Saxophone and Clarinet Competition, and clinched 4th place in the Asia Pacific Saxophone Competition Samuel is also an active chamber musician and an improviser. He co-founded the Xin Saxophone Quartet and Modulah! Collective. A dedicated saxophone teacher, he enjoys sharing his knowledge with his students.
