Synopsis

In the Living Room explores how visual imagery, sounds, scents, and texts can blend to transform a concert stage into an intimate domestic space. Hang out with Kaiwen (clarinet), Frances (piano) and Jun Yan (electronic and visuals) in this multisensory experience of classical works by Cage, Hindson, and Zemlinsky.

Miao Kaiwen

Singaporean clarinetist Miao Kaiwen embraces a multitude of interests that led her to a diverse musical journey. Versatile in both solo and ensemble, she performed in more than 20 cities covering Asia, Europe, and North America. Highlights include the Christoffel Living Room Concerts (Netherlands) collaborating with Dutch poet Quirien van Haelen, Suntory Hall (Japan) Chamber Project and the recent Voyage Festival (Singapore) featuring a multi-sensory performance. Kaiwen holds a Master of Music from Conservatorium Maastricht and Bachelor of Music (Honours) from Yong Siew Toh Conservatory with the NUSS Medal for Outstanding Achievement. Frances Lee

Pianist Frances Lee has performed internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral keyboardist. Her wide-ranging interests include premiering contemporary works, performing on historical instruments, and presenting outreach projects focused on women composers across the centuries. Frances holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Shepherd School of Music, Rice University, and her former teachers include Melvin Chen, Brian Connelly, and Peter Serkin. Chow Jun Yan

Chow Jun Yan (Malaysia, b. 1984) started his composition studies with Mr.Yii Kah Hoe. He graduated with First Class Honours in the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM), Singapore and was studying under Professor Ho Chee Kong, Head of Composition Faculty and Computer Music under Professor Steven Miller. Jun Yan completed his PhD studies in year 2018 in National University of Singapore under Professor Lonce Wyse, with the title of Communication Between Sound and Visual Artists in Improvisatory Performance. He is currently working as an academic faculty (adjunct) at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore.
