Synopsis

The music of the Central Javanese gamelan often calls to mind the beauty and grandeur of Java’s royal palaces, as well as the philosophical and aesthetic ideals of their classical traditions. But alongside these refined, contemplative works are also children’s songs, sentimental ballads, jingles for government messages, and adaptations of other musical genres. In this evening’s performance, the Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble presents a selection of these lighthearted pieces, providing a glimpse of everyday life away from court and ritual.

Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble

Singa Nglaras means “relaxing lion” (the word nglaras means both to “relax” and “to harmonizes or tune”). Formed in January 2004 by A/P Jan Mrazek and assisted by Thow Xin Wei since 2012, the ensemble is supported by the National University of Singapore (NUS) Department of Southeast Asian Studies. The ensemble includes students, alumni, and faculty across NUS, as well as members from outside the university. The ensemble’s primary activity is their weekly latihan (practice sessions) where they learn, socialise, and relax to this seriously relaxing music.
