After 18 years of working as a domestic helper in Singapore, Lisa wants more from life. She seeks help from Sam, the playful but kind-hearted boy who grew up under her care. Meanwhile, her best friend Mirah receives unexpected news from home which sends her into a life-changing dilemma, forcing her to negotiate with her reticent employer Susan. Migrant brother Hassan forms an unlikely friendship with Singaporean rebel Amanda, and begins to discover what he has been needing all along.
In Who Are You? created by the Migrant Writers of Singapore in collaboration with local theatre artists, worlds between migrants and locals collide as they learn to trust, confront and depend on each other. Their intersecting stories delve into questions of identity and longing, and ask how we can truly see each other as fellow human beings with similar hopes, desires, and fears. Over the course of this one-act, Who Are You? attempts to disrupt existing biases while connecting us more deeply in a world that tries to keep us apart.
Migrant Writers of Singapore would like to thank Singapore Repertory Theatre for their generous support with rehearsal venue, Poh Yu Khing for production photography, See Yong Xin for publicity photography and scenic design, Cheng Nien Yuan for dramaturgical feedback and Indonesian translations, and Zakir Hossain Khokan for bringing us all together.
