Nanyang Ballads

Trio Sundal Malam was founded in August 2018 by Malaysian tenor Stefano Chen, joined by erhu player Lin Wei Xiong and guzheng player Chen Hui Ru. This trio is dedicated to exploring and reviving the deep emotions and meanings of folk songs, through the fusion of ancient folk tunes with contemporary music, creating a distinctive sound that blends nostalgia with modern sensibilities. Their repertoire draws from diverse musical influences, preserving the simplicity of tradition while infusing contemporary innovation. Their music, both familiar and fresh, bridges tradition and creativity, invoking reflection on land, life, and humanity’s connections. Beyond mere auditory experiences, their performances are journeys into the heart of culture and emotion.
