Synopsis

Tea and Zen share a deep connection in East Asia, where some believe that the practice of tea tasting serves as a prelude to Zen meditation, and that Zen meditation is the purpose of tea tasting. This relationship is often referred to as the “oneness of tea and Zen”.

 

In tea culture, the act of drinking tea is best approached with a calm mind, encouraging mindfulness and a deliberate savouring of each sip. This intentionality fosters tranquility, purity, and comfort, both in the environment and within one’s state of mind. Through this harmonious practice, individuals can cultivate a deeper sense of presence and appreciation for the moment.

 

In this self-guided workshop, disconnect from the noise and embark on a meditative journey as you engage in the sensory world of tea. Additionally, ease into a state of calm and relaxation with an audio meditation guide crafted by Joyful Garden Community of Mindful Living, accessible via a link on your smartphone. Participants are required to bring their own smartphone and earphones.

Joyful Garden Sangha

Joyful Garden Sangha is a lay community of practice in Singapore following Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village tradition. Founded in 2008 by a group of friends inspired by the practice of mindfulness, the community organises regular Days of Mindfulness and retreats.

Fort Sanctuary

respecT by Fort Sanctuary is a serene and meditative tea establishment located in Esplanade Mall, offering some of the finest freshly brewed teas. The founders have collaborated closely with farmers and tea experts in Wuyishan, China—a region renowned among connoisseurs for producing some of the finest teas in the world. Drawing on their expertise and experiences from their years in Wuyishan, the founders set up Fort Sanctuary to showcase Singapore’s capability in producing fine teas and contributing to the global tea market.
