Terry Ang is an internationally acclaimed flute specialist known for his proficiency across various musical genres. He has thrilled audiences across Asia with his versatility and exciting performances on all members of the flute family (from piccolo down to the contrabass flutes), Irish whistle, Chinese flute (dizi), recorder, and ocarina (clay flute). With over two decades of teaching experience, he has guided numerous to Distinction in the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 8 and Diploma examinations. He is also a highly sought after as a flute tutor for bands throughout Singapore.
As a professional flutist, Terry has represented Singapore in high profile international events and music festivals in China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kazakhstan and India. His all-rounded musicality has been heard in a wide array of settings, ranging from performances at the Istana for local and foreign dignitaries and the opening ceremony of the Ministry of Information and the Arts (MITA) Building, to the launching of National Geographic Channel in Bombay. Notably, he has tackled the demanding flute chair for Lion King at Marina Bay Sands, which is renowned for its challenging flute parts requiring mastery of various flute types.
Beyond his classical roots, Terry is recognized as the region’s most successful flutist in commercial music. He has collaborated with such international artists as Jacky Cheung, Kit Chan, Zhang Hui Mei, Fann Wong and Stephanie Sun, resulting in numerous commercial recordings and TV productions. His eclectic ensemble, E-Tree, comprising a sitarist, a tabla player and himself, continues to be an audience favourite in various commercial events. Currently, he performs with his trio, SBT trio, with their most recent performance for the Mosaic Music Festival 2014 invited by Esplanade.
Terry served as the President of Flute Ensemble (Singapore) from 2005 to 2009, during which he organised masterclasses by esteemed flute masters, including the celebrated James Galway. He dedicates his spare time to doing extensive research in flute production and design, expanding his knowledge of the instrument’s mechanics and methodology, making him one of the leading flute educators in the country.
