Synopsis

This is your chance to watch excerpts from two Chinese opera classics, presented by Chinese Opera and Drama Society (Singapore)!

Legend of the White Snake, performed in Peking opera style, is a folk tale that has been passed down for more than 800 years and the story expresses a love that transcends humankind and spirits; familial affection that moves heaven; friendship that is everlasting; as well as the pursuit for a better life.

The Peony Pavilion is a classic Kunqu opera written by Tang Xianzu in the Ming dynasty. It tells the tale of Du Liniang taking a walk in the garden and later, dreaming of her lover, scholar Liu Mengmei.

Website

The Chinese Opera and Drama Society (Singapore) (SCODS), also known as "Liyuan" (another name for opera troupes in China), was founded in 2010 by Huang Ping and Bian Huibin. They are former lecturers from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts (China) for Beijing opera performance and music respectively. The society aims to enhance the local standards of Chinese opera performance, and to increase the popularity of traditional Chinese opera, especially among younger Singaporeans. They also seek to promote exchange between local and overseas traditional Chinese opera enthusiasts and professionals.

Since its establishment, SCODS has received tremendous support from the National Arts Council and other organisations alike. The Singapore Chinese Opera Museum is a close partner, providing venue for rehearsals and performance opportunities for the society’s members. The society also actively promotes traditional Chinese opera in schools, as well as provide Chinese opera performances, lectures and workshops for the public.
