Synopsis

We meet strangers all the time. A simple conversation may spark a new friendship, love, business deal or even a fight so bad, we wish to never cross paths again. What happens when strangers meet, unable to engage in speech and only having one facial expression? How will it end? Find out in this brand new work featuring larval masks by Grace Kalaiselvi, When Strangers Meet...

Elizabeth Sergeant Tan

Instagram

Liz is a multidisciplinary performer from Singapore. She is a graduate of School of the Arts and the Intercultural Theatre Institute (2016). She has performed with companies like Singapore Theatre Company (Caught, 2019); The Theatre Practice (Four Horse Road, 2017, 2020), and in festivals like the M1 Fringe 2021, in Kalaa Utsavam 2021, 2022 and 2023, and even as the devil in Devils Cherry, SIFA 2022. As of April, she has been an associate artist at Chowk Productions, a movement company specialising in odissi dance.

Having enjoyed a broad swath of performances in plays and movement pieces, she’s now leaning towards movement forms like butoh to stretch her expression, and also towards the camera, in commercial work and short films. Recently, she got to be on her first television set, playing Rosita in Come Closer, available on MeWatch. Some things that interest her include cultural liminality, gender perception/performance, and the way bodies fit in architecture. She's very pleased to be working with masks again in this year’s edition of Flipside!

Yazid Jalil

As an actor, director, writer, and devising collaborator, Yazid has credits in over 60 professional theatrical productions in the last 18 years.

As an alumnus of the Intercultural Theatre Institute and the École Philippe Gaulier, Yazid believes in cross-disciplinary collaborations through encountering the unknown.

When not performing, Yazid enjoys sharing his knowledge and experiences with students. He is currently an adjunct lecturer at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and LASALLE College of the Arts.

As a teaching-artist, Yazid values sincerity, sharing of joy, and collaboration above all else. He hopes to empower more youths with agency and critical thinking through arts education.
