Synopsis

Naskh was one of the first scripts of Islamic calligraphy to develop, and it is commonly used in writing administrative documents and for transcribing books, including the Quran, because of its easy legibility. In this one-hour workshop, learn how to write and construct the basic structure of the Quranic script using traditional tools such as the reed pen (popularly known as qalam), special papers and a personally prepared inkwell. This workshop is suitable for those who have no prior knowledge of the art.

Led by artist Erwan Bar, participants will learn the basics of Arabic calligraphy using traditional tools of reed pen and ink. Calligraphy materials will be provided.

Artist Information

Erwan Bar

Calligraffiti combines the discipline of the traditional, time-honoured practice of Arabic calligraphy with the vibrancy, freedom, and expressiveness of graffiti.

In a way, it represents both Erwan’s journey in finding himself and his aspirations for the world. Always open to multiple genres in the creative arts scene and seeking positives in his experiences, Erwan’s rootedness to traditions has made this amalgamation of perspectives and principles manifest in his works. He hopes for a world that is brave and robust and at the same time, grounded and controlled.
