We explore the fusion of philosophy and cultural symbolism inherent in Malay musical art forms. The talk delves into the dynamic interplay between Malay music's structural nuances and its profound intellectual narratives, shedding light on how these rhythms and melodies echo the pulse of societal and historical evolution. Emphasising the role of music in molding cultural and intellectual discourse, we highlight the exciting contemporary blends of tradition with modern themes.

Artist Information

Dr. Roszalina Rawi

Dr. Roszalina Rawi is a lecturer from the Asian Languages and Cultures Academic Group at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NTU). She is a recipient of the prestigious NIE Overseas Graduate Scholarship and completed her PhD in Education at the University of Cambridge, UK. She helms the Malay Performing Arts university elective module which is highly-rated and popular with the undergraduates.

 

Dr. Roszalina focuses on integrating Malay cultural appreciation in her teaching. With extensive experience in Malay Language education, pedagogy and assessment coupled with her flair and love for the Malay arts, she continues to contribute to the research and promotion of the intellectualism in traditional Malay performing arts such as dikir barat, tarian and angklung. Dr Roszalina is also on the Advisory Board for the National Library Board Malay panel, Bahas 4PM, as well as serving on NTU’s Malay Language and Culture Club as lecturer advisor since 2017.
