Synopsis

8 at Play The Philharmonic Wind Ensemble (PWE) presents music written for the Harmonie, a small ensemble of wind players, often in the combination of pairs of Oboes, Clarinets, French Horns and Bassoons. This Octet combination was used by composers of the 18th century to great effect not only in original works but also, transcriptions of contemporary music. PWE performs Beethoven’s Wind Octet in Eb, a composition known as ‘Harmoniemusik’; an important genre that uses wind instruments and originated as early as the 18th century. Arguably, this laid the roots that led to the growth of the wind band as a medium. The Octet will also be performing Mozart’s Overture to ‘The Magic Flute’. Poulenc’s charming Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano and Persichetti’s dramatic ‘Parable for Solo Horn’ rounds out this concert.
