Little Melodies, Big Dreams

Meet two musical child prodigies who loved music and weren’t afraid to follow their dreams!

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767)

Say it like a maestro: (Geh-org Fil-ipp Tell-eh-mahn)

Telemann was passionate about music from the start! His mother, a very studious woman, wanted him to become a lawyer and believed that music wasn’t a good path for him. But Telemann loved music too much to give up. He secretly taught himself how to play all sorts of instruments—the harpsichord, organ, violin, gamba, and even the trombone! By the time he was 12 years old, he had already composed an entire opera.

Despite his mother's doubts, Telemann stayed true to his dream and became one of the world’s most famous composers. In the end, he composed over 3,000 pieces of music—a feat so impressive, that he made it into the Guinness Book of Records!

Franz Schubert (1797–1828)

Say it like a maestro: (Frants Shoo-bert)

You might not recognise the name Franz Schubert, but you’ve definitely heard his famous song Ave Maria! It’s been in movies and TV shows like Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Simpsons, and even SpongeBob SquarePants!

Franz Schubert loved music from a young age, and he was really good at it too! He played many instruments, and he could sing like an angel. But his father had other ideas. He wanted Schubert to be a teacher, just like him.

Even when Schubert became a teacher, he never stopped making music. He continued to compose songs and symphonies whenever he could! One day, he made a big decision—he quit his job as a teacher and decided to follow his dream of becoming a composer, which was what he truly loved! His choice led him to become one of the most famous composers to have ever lived.

Both Telemann’s and Schubert’s achievements show us that with courage, passion, and determination, even the smallest steps can lead to something amazing.
