How many people can the lift fit? Whatever the number, it certainly isn't big enough to house Rio Silaen and the entire Voice of Indonesia show choir! We had to split them into kids and adults, with both groups giving us soulful renditions of Surga Di Bawa Langit (Heaven Under The Sky). The choir was in town for Voices – A Festival of Song 2019.
The Bunun people are used to great heights, so it was only fitting that we invited them into our cargo lift when they were here for A Tapestry of Sacred Music in April 2019. They sang a rousing piece that celebrates the birth of a newborn, complete with the accompaniment of a cello.
The Lover Boy himself says hello.
We dolled up our cargo lift with balloons, PIP (see if you can spot our mascot) and even a plush durian for Thai indie darling Phum Viphurit. Phum played at Esplanade as part of Mosaic Music Series on 15 May 2019. Here he is with Hello Anxiety, off his 2019 EP Bangkok Balter Club.
Who knew a ruan could rock so hard?
Martin Feng, the enigmatic master of the classical Chinese instrument, schooled us with a ruan masterclass that made us see (and hear) the instrument in a brand new light. The maestro was at Esplanade for his debut performance at Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts in 2019.
Who knew a cargo lift would have great acoustics for a grand piano?
Fresh-faced piano virtuoso Tiffany Poon regaled us with a lovely rendition of Franz Liszt's Spanish Rhapsody. The Hong Kong-born 22-year-old was here for her sold-out Singapore debut at Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts in 2019.
You might have sung to yourself in the lift before, but you've never heard singing like this in a lift before.
ConChords, the award-winning a cappella group from the Phillipines, shot right through our hearts with their electrifying rendtition of Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name. They performed at Esplanade's Voices – A Festival of Song in 2018.
